Job Description and Duties

Under close supervision of the Senior Engineer, Water Resources and in a trainee capacity, the Student Assistant (Engineering and Architectural Sciences) assists the various construction staff, engineers, and technicians with construction projects and reports for the Levee Repair Project Headquarters (LRPH).The scope of responsibilities of the incumbent are formulated to suit the incumbent’s technical knowledge, skills, long range goals, and the Department’s immediate workload requirements.

Special Requirements

This is a Student Assistant (E&A) position, with a maximum of 1500 hours of work per 12 consecutive months. Proof of application for, or enrollment in, a college curriculum preparing for upper division status in an engineering, science, architecture, construction management or a related curriculum leading to a bachelor's or advanced degree is required.

  1. Enrolled in nine (9) semester/eight (8) quarter units for undergraduate students or six (6) semester/four (4) quarter units for graduate students.  
  2. Achieved a 2.0 grade point average in the most recently completed academic term.
  3. Declared a major related to the duties of the advertised position and enrolled in coursework required for that major.

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with others and maintain regular, consistent, predictable attendance, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills, personal computer skills, and good organizational skills. The ideal candidate will possess foundational knowledge of civil engineering concepts, including experience with reviewing technical specifications, construction plans, and contractor schedules, as well as general internship experience in construction or engineering. Practical experience through coursework, internships, or fieldwork—such as conducting site inspections, writing construction reports, and performing quantity calculations (e.g., earthwork, concrete, asphalt)—is strongly preferred. Familiarity with soil and concrete lab testing, reviewing and responding to contractor correspondence, and tracking meeting minutes are also desirable. Must have experience using Microsoft Office programs. Candidates who are majoring in Civil Engineering are highly encouraged to apply.
